RIO Freshwater Fly Fishing Lines — fly lines developed, tested and approved by anglers for anglers. Which fly line should you choose?

The fly line must be suited to the environment, the target species and the technique used. It will therefore depend directly on the equipment used (rod power, reel size, fly type, etc.). 

Type: natural or synthetic?

Choosing between a natural or synthetic line depends on your fishing style.

• - The natural fly line, braided from plant fibres and dressed, wins anglers over with its control, its smooth glide, its managed density and its excellent floatability for fine fishing. Ideal for river purists, it requires regular maintenance.
• - The synthetic fly line, made from PVC or modern polymers, offers durability, smooth glide, ease of use and longevity. It is perfectly suited to beginners and reservoir anglers.

Profile

• - The Double Taper (DT) is approximately 30m long and has a profile with both ends tapered. There is no specific direction of use and the line can even be reversed at the end of the season to double its lifespan. Ideal for short to medium distance casting. 
• - The Weight Forward (WF) has a profile similar to the DT over the first 10 metres, then has a constant thin diameter of approximately 20m called the running line. It allows you to cast far easily thanks to the greater weight of the line towards the front.
• - The Level profile is a fly line of constant diameter; these are used for short-distance fishing. Rather short at 12-15m, they are perfect for dry fly or nymph fishing.

Weight

The AFTMA (Association of Fishing Tackle Manufacturers of America) determines the weight of the line over the first 9.14 metres, as follows:

• - Line #2: 5.2g
• - Line #3: 6.5g
• - Line #4: 7.8g
• - Line #5: 9.1g
• - Line #6: 10.4g
• - Line #7: 12g
• - Line #8: 13.6g, etc.

Density

• - Floating line (F): less dense than water, it floats. It is mainly used for dry fly fishing.
• - Sinking line (S): denser than water, it sinks. Ideal for nymph fishing in deep water. There are different densities and therefore different sink rates (S1 to S7).
• - Intermediate line (I): slightly denser than water, it sinks slowly. Perfect for nymph fishing in shallow water, for example. There are 4 variants: Hover (H), Slow, Medium and Fast, which represent the sink rates of the line.
